Special Learning Centre

The Special Learning Centre (SLC) is a warm and friendly environment which supports the needs of pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). The main focus is on supporting pupils with additional literacy and numeracy skills, as well as supporting pupils with their well-being. Pupils are withdrawn from mainstream subjects for small intervention work groups for 6 hours per fortnight. All work is conducted in a nurturing manner where all pupils are happy to learn in a relaxed environment.

Resources used within the SLC to support pupils’ learning

Numeracy

Numicon: a resource supporting numeracy through a visual tiles resource.

Dominoes: a resource which can be used for Additions, Subtraction and division

Playing Cards: another visual aid for pupils to use to help support additions, subtractions and multiplications.

Pupils will also learn how to tell the time and learn money skills.

Literacy

Literacy is implemented throughout all lessons in the SLC using a variety of tools and learning programmes.

Interactive Data Language Intervention (IDL): is a speaking-computer based multi-sensory system which supports learners with dyslexia and other learning difficulties to increase their reading and spelling ages.

Story Spinners: enables pupils to use their imagination through 5 key areas for language skills.

Lexia: an online learning resource where pupils complete tasks in all areas of literacy. This is tracked and pupils can earn certificates when completing a topic.

Touch Typing Skills: practise to improve speed and accuracy.

Hand Writing Skills: developed using a hand written work booklet.

Read Every Day: noted in a pupil’s reading log.

Spell Well: a series which focuses on tricky words, CVC words and techniques on how to spell words.

Pupils will also have the opportunity to engage with daily topics, for example what is in the news, a little like circle time.

We also offer support for pupils’ emotional needs, where pupils will have the opportunity to work on their emotions through a booklet called "Let's Talk for Teenagers".

This has proven to be successful to raise pupils’ self-esteem and understanding their emotions.

The special learning centre is also a base for break time clubs where pupils can feel relaxed and engage with peers in a happy environment. This is staffed at all times.

The Friends of Ysgol Harri Tudur/Henry Tudor School have been selected by Co-op as a recipient of their charitable Local Community Fund initiative. This is similar to that run by Tesco with their community fund, where we received £1500 to assist with the breakfast club. The Co-op fund works slightly differently; you need to be a Co-op member (£1) and download their app; if you then select the Community tab you can see the causes - select The Friends of the School. Monies raised will help continue the breakfast club into 2025. The notification message from Co-op is repeated below. Congratulations! The Friends of Ysgol Harri Tudur/Henry Tudor School has been chosen to be part of the next round of the Co-op Local Community Fund (Cause ID: 87323) The funding round will start on Sunday 20 October 2024 and will run for 12 months until 19 October 2025. During this time, Co-op Members will be able to choose you as their cause, the more members who choose you, the more money you’ll receive. The Co-op invests profits back into communities. By becoming a member you can choose a cause; the total amount each cause receives depends upon how many members have chosen them. As such, please sign up and select The Friends of Ysgol Harri Tudur/Henry Tudor School as your cause!  Read More…
